You can get all of the support weapons you need in a single cheap building, and those weapons all work competently if largely unexceptionally. Both mainline infantry options are effective (although Penals are easier to use and Conscripts are stronger if you have the micro/tight timings for them), and Guards and Shocks both perform well as elite infantry. Large squad sizes make avoiding squad wipes relatively easy, which is a key part of playing competently.
